By geographical area, Indonesia is a country consisting of many islands. From the five major islands such as Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Java, Sumatra and Papua to the small islands that number hundreds and even thousands. According to the Deputy of Maritime Sovereignty of the Coordinating Ministry for the Ministry of Marine Affairs, there are 16,056 islands in Indonesia that have been standardized in the United Nations until July 2017. From the many islands of Indonesia there are also different tribes. So Indonesia is regarded as a multiethnic country.

Indonesian Central Bureau of Statistics said that ethnic in Indonesia amounts to 300 ethnic. In addition to data from the Central Bureau of Statistics, many other supporting things make Indonesia a multiethnic country. The many regions and the diverse climate and the type or character of the natural environment vary so that the people inhabiting a certain region will have varied diversity of behavior or culture. Ethnic itself is a class of ethnic or ethnic groups, as a unique community unit with its ethnicity. Then the culture itself is a way of life that develops, and is shared by a group of people, and passed down from generation to generation.
Because Indonesian society is made up of many ethnic groups, this society has been known as a multiethnic society. This is reinforced by the slogan that is on the symbol of the nation of Indonesia that is "Bhineka Tunggal Ika" or different but still one. The motto proves that since the first Indonesian society is a plural society. The distinction then makes social unity inherent in every ethnic culture such as regional languages, customary clothing, traditional houses, and culinary specialties, as well as customary law, or other symbols attached to each ethnic. For the example like the province of East Java is dominated by ethnic Madura with spicy food as his trademark. Or the area of Yogyakarta is thick with Javanese tribe that leads to high etiquette because it is still thick with the customs of his palace.

Then in addition to ethnic differences in each region, even sometimes an area has many ethnicities. Examples such as in the area of Jember. Jember is a small town called "Pandalungan" city. Pandalungan is a metaphorical conception that leads to different societies of different ethnicities and cultures interacting in space and time, thus giving birth to new cultural variants. Ethnic in question is Madura and Java. These two types then side by side and blend into a new culture that harmonizes the two.
For these reasons Inonesia should be regarded as multiethnic country. The ethnic diversity that causes many cultures in Indonesia is greatest asset that owned by Indonesia. Of course not easy to learn or even memorize all ethnic in Indonesia. However, by introducing the diversity that became the wealth of the Indonesian nation to the world is definitely a pride for the people of Indonesia
